Contrary to popular inquiry Messenger ads have nothing to do with either Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger (Windows Messenger being the purely XP version). This is actually a seperate service that is part of the Windows NT Family (Win NT, 2K, XP, 2K3). To disable this click on Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services. Once in services scroll down the list until you come across Messenger (Hit M to jump down the list). Right click Messenger and select properties. Now a box will pop up, click on stop, then change startup type to disabled. Now you'll never be bothered with those annoying and endless messages!

On a side note some programs actually require the NT Messenger service, but so far the only program I've seen was an analog to digital converter. So chances are 99.9% in your favor, if you didn't understand that last sentence. If your interested in updating either your MSN or Windows Messengers check out TCMagazine.info and select search on the left hand bar. We're officially affiliated with their site, and I personally read the site daily for newly released software & drivers.

This article is now considered a legacy Article if your running Windows XP SP2, this service is now blocked by the firewall.
