Anyone that has read my Site knowns I'm both a Linux and a Windows fan. And although Microsoft may charge their "computer tax", nearly every new computer ships with a copy of Windows so it's basically a $100 computer tax. But looking past that Windows XP SP2 can be a very pleasant experience for the beginner to average user. And XP just keeps on getting more stable every Service Pack.

Now it's nice to see a big company like Microsoft that generally only thinks about the bottom line, releasing free programs to the public from time to time. And whats notible about their software is the amount of ingenuity that goes into them. Today I'll be reviewing Microsoft Calculator Plus.

Microsoft Calculator Plus takes and builds on the function set of the regular XP Calculator. It contains both the Scientific And Standard Views, and adds on the Conversion Calculator. This little gem contains an amazing amount of conversions that I hadn't seen since Physics 12, and even some of them had me raising an eyebrow. It's conversion categories are: Area, Consumption (engine), Currencies, Energy, Lengths, Power, Pressure, Temperature, Velocity, Volume, Weights.

Not only did it have a surprisingly number of Categories each of these categories was very impressive. Heres an example of the lengths you can convert to and from: angstroms, astronomical units, barleycorns, centimeters, chains (UK), chi, chou, chr, cun, fathoms, fathoms (Hungry), feet, furlongs, gan, hands, hunh, inches, ja, jeong, kabiet, ken, keub, kilometers, lar, light years, links (UK), meters, miles, millimeters, nautical miles, nieu, parsecs, picas, ri (Japan), ri (Korea), sawk, sen, shaku, span, sun, tsuen, va, yards, yote, zhang. Try saying that on one breath! Not to mention acres, hectors and all those once you get into area. Although I wouldn't trust the currency converter, it would need some sort of syncronous updating, to be accurate.

With its sleak design, which goes semi transparent when theres a background image (another window or icons). It makes using the Windows Calculator feel more comfortable, like the feeling of getting a better car for the same ride.
