Well it took me a while but I'm finally getting around to rewriting my Linux Kernel article. Originally this article was dedicated to the latest V2.4 kernel, but in February 2005 I took the jump and moved over to the Linux V2.6 kernel. And all I can say is WOW! For those of you that don't know what a kernel is it's basically the brains and nervous system of your operating system. And some are more tweaked and primed then others.
Now when it comes to the Linux kernel it's arguably one of the best constructed kernels out there, atleast in the open source community. Not only that but it also has minor releases that come out quite frequently, these include security fixes and newer revised drivers. This particular kernel also included several new scheduling algorithms, so for web hosting things are noticably faster.
Not only is the kernel great, so are the drivers included in the actual kernel. New in the V2.6 kernel tree is ALSA support which is the latest sound architecture, to run alsa under V2.4 the Alsa module had to be downloaded seperately.
Anyone out there thats running a Linux based box, I would strong recommend upgrading your kernel to the latest V2.6 kernel (or latest your distribution offers as a package.
